WMC's two talented returning senior starters, point guard London Burris and forward Omari Lewis, played a big role in making the Trojans feel helpless. Dec. 15--MUSKEGON -- Western Michigan Christian may have lost a big chunk of its productivity from last season's Class D state championship team, but the Warriors still possess an aura of intimidation. It seemed to have an affect on the play of visiting Fruitport at Western Michigan Christian High School on Tuesday. "Links of London Power Walk Charm came thinking we were playing the three-time defending state champions and (WMC) had it in the bag," Fruitport coach Bill Andree said after the Trojans dropped a 68-44 decision to the Warriors. "We acted like we couldn't compete against them." WMC's two talented returning senior starters, point guard London Burris and forward Omari Lewis, played a big role in making the Trojans feel helpless. Burris connected on three of his five 3-pointers in the first half and led all scorers with 23 points, while Lewis was a beast in the paint, recording a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. "We've been motivating guys in practice, but really, it's everyone's part," Burris said. "All the seniors Links of London Bangles tried to lead the younger kids. We need to stay disciplined and be motivated each night and we'll have a chance to be great." "The cupboard wasn't bare coming back for this season," added WMC coach Jim Goorman, whose squad improves to 3-0. "We've been able to build around those two. London's just a blur, and Omari is a thoroughbred out there." Goorman was pleased with his team's effort at sharing the basketball, especially Burris, and with their defensive intensity, which frazzled Fruitport. The Trojans were forced into 22 turnovers. "Defensively, we we're so active in the first half and a lot of that was without a lot of solid communication," Goorman said. "We were jumping to the ball, helping each other out. We were sensing where everyone was on the court." "I don't think we were used to that kind of speed, especially Links of London Big Rock 'Diamond' Ring Charm on," Andree added. By the half, Fruitport was in a 38-15 hole, and the balanced scoring that Andree likes to see what non-existent. Senior guard Steve Devries had 12 of the Trojans' 15 points. Fruitport woke up and found a sidekick to Devries at the start of the second half, surprising the hosts with a 10-2 run. Junior guard Mike Reyes scored six points during the spurt and finished with 11. "We got a little complacent in the second half," Goorman said.
