Fish introduced to a Central Anatolian dam reservoir have successfully crossbred Links of London native fish, creating a new species that is dominating fishermen’s catches but is too thin and bony to sell and eat. “After these new fish appeared, the number of carp started shrinking," said Coşkun Binici, who has been fishing for years in the reservoir of a dam in the Central Anatolian province of Yozgat. The shrinking carp population, locals eventually realized, was the result of goldfish introduced to the body of water in successively fertilizing native carp eggs, causing a new crossbreed of fish to develop rapidly. “Links of London Dice Charm color of the carp has changed to red and the fish have become shorter. The normal weight of a fish is between and kilos but these goldfishcarp only weigh grams," Binici said, adding that the population of the new fish has increased every year. Fishermen from the district of Gelingüllü, who make their living fishing behind the Yozgat Dam, cannot sell the fish they are now catching because the new crossbreeds have little meat Links of London Disc charm are full of bones, Binici said. He added that many fishermen had quit their jobs and entered other lines of work. “When we first started fishing, there were between and boats commanded by cooperative members, but this number has shrunk to six boats," Binici said, adding that the situation has more recently begun to improve. “Over the last two years, rains have caused flooding and the dam had to be opened to release excess water. Opening the flood gates caused the population of the new kind of fish to decrease," he said. “After the level of the dam rose, the number of baby carp has increased, which is giving fishermen hope for the future." Yozgat Provincial Agriculture Directorate officials have cautioned, however, that the new fish resembles the Carassius species, also known as red pool fish. Discovered in Links of London Dome Jade Charm dams and ponds throughout Turkey, these fish reproduce very quickly compared to other species. “The Carassius can adapt easily to weather conditions, which makes its immune system stronger and makes it a dominant species," the officials said.
