What began as an "expensive," "California-influenced" style, boomed in the 1920s as a popular option for the middleclass. While architects continued to build them, bungalows fell out of fash ion after World War II. Now valued forLinks of London Power Walk Charmwoodwork and craftsmanship, for their old-style charm and history, the Chicago Bungalow, is popular again. Bungalows make up nearly a third of Chicago's housing stock, numbering more than 80,000, according to the Historic Links of London Bungalow Association (HCBA). Mayor Richard M. Daley launched the Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative in 2000 in an effort to rehabilitate them as well as assist owners in maintaining and updating bungalows. HCBA's Green Bungalow Block, a five year program supported by a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, rehabs foreclosed bungalows throughout the city to provide energy-efficient housing and teach homeowners about green products and techniques. Now in its fifth and final year, Green Bungalow Block has begun work in South Shore on the 7600 block of South Cregier Avenue. On the first Green Block (2002), the 6400 block of South Fairfield, HCBA retrofitted four modelLinks of London Big Rock 'Diamond' Ring Charm, each featuring a different concept: the handicap accessible, home office, young professional and classic restoration. The models, available for open houses and tours, were sold. The subsequent blocks, 7700 block of South Throop (2006), 7600 block of South Ada (2006), and the 5000 block of West Wolfram (2007) featured one model also open for tours that served as examples of renovation possibilities for homeowners.Links of London Dome Jade Charmoffers grants and loans to homeowners of certified bungalows looking to make updates. Certification requires home ownership and completing a simple application, found online at www.chicagobungalow.org. The current model, will offer the same through a more handson approach.
