22--The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office released a sketch Tuesday of a man suspected of stealing an $80,000 diamond ring from a Hilton Head Island jewelry store. The man went into Heritage Fine Jewelers at 430 William Links of London Bookworm Charm Parkway in the Pineland Station shopping center at about 3:45 p.m. Friday to look at engagement ring settings he said were for his girlfriend, according to a sheriff's news release. Seemingly knowledgeable about gems, he asked to look at a ring with a 5.39-carat diamond surrounded by white diamonds. When the jeweler turned to get a loupe to view the stone, Links of LondoN Classic 18ct Gold Maple LeaF Charm man ran out with the ring. He jumped into the back of a silver Dodge Ram truck with Georgia tags. InvLinks of Londonestigators discovered the truck abandoned nearby a short time later. It had been reported stolen from Savannah on Sept. 15, according to the release. The truck's driver was described by store employees as a white man, possibly Hispanic, in his late 20s to early 30s, about 6 feet tall and 190 pounds. The thief was described as white man in his late 20s to early 30s, about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, with short-cropped, dark hair and crooked front teeth. Along with a blue visor, he wore blue-gray plaid or denim shorts, a button-down shirt and glasses with rectangular lenses, the release said.
